The wine box ceremony

The idea of this is simple: you take a bottle of your favourite wine and a wooden box to put it in. During the ceremony you and your newly betrothed place the wine into the box along with the vows, speeches or a letter that each of you has written to the other. The box is closed with the intention that you open it again on your first anniversary (or after your first major fight as a married couple…). On that day you drink the wine together and read the vows and speeches, and remember why you got married. You can buy more wine and write more letters and seal the box again for the next year, creating a fabulous anniversary tradition.

For my wedding I made a box like this for our wine ceremony. We sealed our favourite wine in the box along with our vows, planning the open it on our first anniversary – or first big argument – so we can drink the wine and re-read our promises to each other. Friends at the wedding asked me to make one for them, and on and on.

This is NOT a plywood box pumped out in a factory in China using a laser cutter, and drenched with toxic plastics.

It is really handmade, using traditional hand tools, to order, in Australia, by an Australian craftsman, from sustainably sourced Australian hardwoods. It is finished with food safe, non-toxic and VOC free hand rubbed shellac (on the lid panel and inside of box) and oil (on the outside of the box). It is silky smooth to touch and, weird as it sounds, the hand rubbed oil finish feels absolutely amazing to handle. My amateur photography really doesn’t do justice to them.

It is pictured in Jarrah with a beautifully figured Queensland Walnut panel top and bottom. However it is available in any Australian wood – if you have something specific in mind, just ask! The hardware is solid brass and made in Australia.

Fits a single bottle of most standard wines, but sizes can easily be modified – just ask! Unfortunately though, the fabulous and rare Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams is not included with the purchase.
