Àn Table in Silver Ash and Myrtle
Àn Table in Silver Ash and Myrtle
This is the same classical Chinese form as its Blackwood sibling — an àn table (案), no glue, every joint hand-cut to lock together mechanically. The legs splay and rake at a degree and a half, which means every mitre in the frame has to be cut to fractional precision. It didn’t get easier the second time around.
Silver Ash is my favourite timber to work with — it cuts beautifully with hand tools and burnishes to a gleaming finish like nothing else. Myrtle is my favourite to look at. So this table is a selfish one, really. I chose the timbers I wanted to spend three weeks with, and paired them because I thought they’d be beautiful together. I think they are.
